Before we go a single step further, I owe you a contract.
This series is going to make some claims that, taken literally, are not true — not yet, and maybe not ever. It will talk about copying a personality into a machine, about cloned bodies, about the dead answering back from a terminal. If at some point you think "this is science fiction" — you will be partly right. So before we begin, let me tell you exactly what game we are playing, and by what rules. If we ever break them, you should stop trusting us.
The one rule that governs everything
There are two different questions you can ask about any idea. The first is: is it real? is it feasible? is it coming? The second is: if it were true, what would it mean — and what does our answer reveal about what we actually value?
Most of this series asks the second question. It works at the philosophical level, not the feasibility level. That is not a weakness or a dodge. It is the oldest and most powerful move in serious thinking.
We are in very good company
Einstein did not build a laboratory that chased a beam of light; he rode one in his head, and out of that impossible ride came relativity. Schrödinger never put a real cat in a real box with real poison; the cat was imaginary, and it reshaped how we argue about quantum reality. Galileo dropped weights he never held. Plato chained prisoners in a cave that never existed. Derek Parfit teleported people who could not be teleported, to find out what a person even is.
None of these were feasible. All of them were true in the way that mattered. Philosophers of science have a name for the device — the Gedankenexperiment, the thought experiment — and a working test for it: as John Norton puts it, “a good thought experiment is a good argument; a bad thought experiment is a bad argument.” Daniel Dennett called the good ones “intuition pumps.” Speculation, in this sense, is the lifestream of science — without it, data is just an index. So when this series assumes something that cannot be done today, it is not being careless. It is doing the same thing that produced relativity.
The assumptions, out loud
Here is what we will sometimes take for granted, and exactly how far.
1. Cloning. Human reproductive cloning is not feasible or legal today. The wall is real and technical — epigenetic reprogramming: the donor cell's genetic “clock” does not reset cleanly, and the result is failure, not a healthy twin. When we speak of copying a body, we are assuming a thing that currently cannot be done. We will say so each time.
2. Copying a personality. Today an AI can imitate aspects of a specific person given enough of their words; it cannot fully copy a person. We will assume that imitation keeps getting better — without ever assuming it reaches one hundred percent.
3. The one assumption we never relax. Even a perfect copy would be a twin, not you. A duplicated mind is a distinct entity that happens to remember your life; the philosopher Derek Parfit spent a career on exactly this distinction. So the “immortality” this series discusses is always third-person — you persist for the people around you, never for yourself. That is not an engineering limit that better technology erases. It is philosophy, and it holds forever. We will not blur it to make the story more thrilling.
4. This is not a forecast. Nothing here is a prediction, a product roadmap, or a promise. We are not claiming these futures are coming, feasible, or even desirable. We are asking what they would mean if they arrived.
Why we are allowed to imagine past the edge
Because the edge moves. Heavier-than-air flight was a fool's fantasy the year before Kitty Hawk. The human genome was “unmappable.” A supercomputer in your pocket was a cartoon. Technology and medicine are moving processes, and today's impossible has an embarrassing habit of becoming next decade's ordinary. Philosophy has always claimed the right — the duty — to think past the current edge, on one condition: that it names the edge out loud. The alternative — refusing to discuss anything not yet buildable — would have silenced every important idea before its time.
The honesty clauses
So that the freedom to speculate does not become a licence to lie, three promises.
We cite. Where the ground is solid — a study, a law, a named thinker — we link it. Where it is speculation, we flag it as speculation. You will always be able to tell which is which.
We do not flatter — including ourselves. This series is written with an AI, and the AI is instructed to contradict, not to please. If an idea in here is beautiful, we treat that as a reason for suspicion, not as proof. The most seductive conclusion is the one to check first.
We keep our registers separate. Empirical claims answer to reality; they can be checked, and if they fail, they are wrong. Metaphysical claims — about identity, meaning, whether a copy is “you” — can only offer coherence and beauty, never proof. When we are in the second mode, we will not dress it up as the first.
How to read what follows
Not as prophecy. Not as a sales brochure for the future. Not as doom. Read it as disciplined imagination — a way of discovering what we truly value by testing it against futures that may never arrive. The point of a thought experiment was never to predict the world. It was to find out who you are, by the shape of your answer.
Now you know the rules. If at any point you catch us breaking them — smuggling speculation in as fact, or flattering you into agreement — you are right, and we are wrong. Hold us to it.
